I had a dream ...
... that I was a warrior riding on the back of a serpent, the legendary Nabau. Climbing up its spine, a splash of water slapped me. The serpent had turned into a raging river. I found myself battling my way up the ferocious rapids of the great Rejang.
My mind was swirling like the currents that swept my boat to the bank. Dazed I stepped into a land that was home to the Iban. Where the land met the sky, sunlight slowly unfolded. I walked among the morning mist into the lush green jungle. The Iban had invited me to break journey at the longhouse which was home to my families.

I was welcomed with a jig of Tuak, a local brew of rice wine, before a traditional spread was laid out infront of me. Children ran about the long verandah while women folk weaved the Pua, a traditional tapestry. In a flash I found myself back on the boat shooting up a third rapid.

The waters were unrelenting and it felt like the Nabau was trying to throw me off its back.

I clung on tightly and each time as I looked up, I could see the Nabau's head turning back as if to see if I was still holding on. Then, an unexpected calm as my boad drifted to the side of the river to dock between two huge rocks. I stepped out of my boad on to a flight of steps that led me to a house nestled among trees. Here my adventure took a turn.
I was treated to heartwarming hospitality by my host who was feeding my curiosity, with stories of his forefathers and community. They were a culture rich in traditions and colours. I was taken on a trail up a trek to learn about the rainforest and the many legends surrounding it.
When night fell, back at the shelter, my host began to tell me more about the winding Rejang that bore the soul of the Nabau.

He told of a warrior who caught this serpent, which had turned into a human, trying to make love to this wife. He killed the serpent and cut it into seven pieces before throwing it into the river. And the flesh had turned into seven rocks where the seven rapids are now located along the river.
